Foreigners with temporary residence in Slovakia are required to register for insurance, whether public or commercial .
Public health insurance – covers health care and services related to the provision of health care to the extent according to Act no. 577 / 2004 on the scope of health care, i.e. emergency health care, medicines, medical devices, dietetic foods, spa care, some preventive examinations (e.g. child prevention, 1x a year gynecological preventive examination, 1x every 2 years general preventive examination).

Individual health insurance – covers health care provided beyond the scope of public health insurance to the extent specified in the insurance contract according to the Civil Code.
Who is insured under individual health insurance?
- Persons who do not have the possibility of health insurance in the public system
- they do not have permanent residence in the Slovak Republic
- they are not employed by an employer based in the Slovak Republic
- they do not perform independent gainful activity on the territory of the Slovak Republic
- work or do business in the Slovak Republic but do not meet the minimum wage requirement (year 2022 – EUR 646)
- On the territory of the Slovak Republic, e.g. in order:
- business (as company managers, does not apply to SZČO), family reunification
- performing sports activities
- they perform work and are sent and paid from abroad or work for an employer who benefits
- diplomatic benefits and immunity
- study, but not students from an EU member state or on the basis of an international agreement to which the Slovak Republic is bound
- holidays, visits, tourism

- The insurance company will cover the costs of healthcare up to EUR 60,000,
- for pregnancy insurance up to EUR 17,000,
- the insured sum for dental treatment is EUR 300, while the maximum limit per insurance event is EUR 100,
- if repatriation is necessary (transportation of the insured patient or body remains), the insurance company will pay the costs up to EUR 20,000.

SIMPLE health insurance for foreigners covers the necessary treatment of an accident or sudden illness, medical care to avert a threat to life or health, treatment of sudden pain.
